The history of the department of Medical Microbiology of the University of Groningen started in 1877 when professor Fokker was appointed as the first professor of Hygiene in The Netherlands. Hygiene is still part of the mission of the department of Medical Microbiology: the importance of microbes in health and disease. Two of the research subjects are: 1) The ecology of bacteria in the intestinal tract 2) How to control hygiene in a closed environment. Ad 1) These studies resulted in over 130 peer-reviewed papers including 2 highly-cited basic gut health related papers in ISI list (562 citations) as well as several collaborative projects with industry.

Ad 2) In the Sample experiment it is investigated how hygiene can be controlled in closed environments such as the International Space Station (ISS). Environmental samples and body samples of astronauts in the ISS are being investigated.

The MMB-UMCG has close collaboration with the Office for Medical Technology Assessment of the UMCG, which has over 15 years of experience with technology assessments and economic evaluations.

In addition to health economics, research in the above mentioned areas of expertise:
Consultation and state of the art economic evaluation alongside numerous clinical studies e.g. Medical Oncology, Diabetes Care, Mental Health, Nephrology, Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology.
