The Medical School of Ege University Izmir, Turkey, which was founded in 1955, includes 26 departments with 181 professors, 87 associate and 72 assistant professors, 76 fellows, and 388 residents. The departments of the school are classified under 3 main divisions: Basic Medical Sciences, Internal Medicine and Surgical Medicine. The course lasts 6 years and is comprised of preclinical (3 years), clinical (2 years) and internship (1 year) periods. Integrated system is being applied since 1989 and active learning techniques since 1998. As from 2002-2003 academic year, Ege University has participated in the Socrates/Erasmus Program of the European Commission. Scientific research is also the basis of the teaching provided by the University. The University operations support the development of society, as well as business and industry.
